This generational family photo session took place at Waialae Beach Park in the Waikiki area of Oahu, a location well suited for extended and multi-generation family photography. Photographing families across generations is something I approach with intention, especially when it comes to documenting family elders. I am always aware that family photo sessions are often few and far between, and capturing meaningful images of grandparents and great-grandparents can be incredibly important over time.
The session began under bright, sunny skies before rain clouds gradually rolled in. Shifts in weather are common in Hawaii, and brief changes in light, cloud cover, or passing showers are a normal part of the island experience.

Its open layout, easy access, and quieter atmosphere compared to other Waikiki beaches make it ideal for photo sessions. The combination of shoreline, and Palm trees make it a common choice for many families that are after that "quintessential island vacation" look to their photos.
Sunset at this location sits farther west, which means sessions typically avoid direct, harsh sunlight as the sun sets. The light tends to soften, often producing subtle pink and pastel skies once the sun dips beyond view. For families hoping for brighter, sunlit images at this location, opt for a sunrise session!
